Cortisol is released during acute stress to cause a fight or flight response. Cortisol released during stressful situations, affects the immune system by preventing the production of inflammatory mediators. This in turn weakens immune responses against infections (think catching a cold during university exam times). cortisol is also released during exercise and mild exercise can be beneficial with an anti-inflammatory effect. However for professional athletes intense training weakens their immunity making them more susceptible to seasonal infections.
Stress & ageing can decrease defensin levels leading to a compromised first line of defence. Defensins are a natural mucosal antibiotic with an antimicrobial effect, it is an important component of the first defence line against pathogens.
High levels of IgA antibodies are indicative of a protective intervention by the innate immune system during intestinal damage such as intestinal permeability episodes, food intolerance and elevated microbial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). While low levels of intestinal IgA antibodies is a sign of stress that weakens immunity. Low levels of IgA are prevalent in high pressure jobs, depression and in elite athletes during intensive training.

Bacterial control by Lysozyme is a cornerstone of Early immunity. Elevated intestinal lysozyme is a marker of bacterial toxins crossing into the blood stream. Bacterial toxins circulating in the body lead to an EXAGGERATED. inflammatory RESPONSE that is linked to many chronic inflammatory Conditions.
Alpha-1-Anti-Trypsin or AAT is a neutralising protein that has cellular protective and anti-inflammatory properties. AAT is released following an infection, & elevated levels are a marker of intestinal inflammation.

Leaky Gut could lead to crossing of both food & microbial fragments into the blood stream leading to immune reactions that have been linked to an increasing number of conditions.
Human zonulin protein, is a marker of Leaky Gut & Increased zonulin levels have been identified in conditions such as autism, coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel & Crohn’s disease, type1 & 2 diabetes, allergies, infections of the gastrointestinal tract, autoimmune conditions, arthritis, Weight Gain and in insulin resistant obesity.
